Tears filled
Alexi’s eyes as he filtered through the thoughts of the others. They didn’t
believe that their people’s deaths lay on Jettermane’s soul, yet they all knew
that the war had escalated after Jettermane killed his uncle’s mate. Even as
they also knew that his uncle’s mate needed killing as she was evil personified,
even if she was Jettermane’s biological Mother.
His free hand
caressed gently up and down the length of Jettermane’s stomach, trying
desperately to keep his mate from falling apart at the thought of him being the
cause of so much hurt throughout their world. He had no words to offer in
comfort that wouldn’t come off sounding contrite.
“Jetter,”
Blayze reached for them and Jettermane cringed away. “Don’t blame yourself for
something that isn’t your fault. It was by a twist of fate in time, long before
you and I were even born that set our two clans at war.
“How do you
know all this?” Jettermane demanded from his arms.
When we were
mated I did some research into you family. I wanted to know why you uncle was
so gung-ho on having you. I wanted to know what made you so special that he was
willing to trick your father and claim you as payment.” Blayze pinched the
bridge of his nose as though trying to work out just how to explain it.
Jettermane settled
closer against Alexi’s side. He could see that most of the people around them
had moved away giving them as much room as possible. All his kind remained and
he didn’t hold it against them. He knew they all needed to know just what they
were getting themselves into by joining their race with the vampyres.
“What did you
find?” Jettermane asked softly. His hand snaking out and pulling Blayze closer.
“I need to know, love.”
“What I have
found out was told to me by others so I can’t say for certain how much of it is
even true. Deep down inside me I am inclined to believe most of it. “I have
already told you that your father is not your biological parent, yet he loves
you as if you were. I was told. long ago your mother had an affair with your
uncle – her brother – and you are the product of the union. When the affair was
found out and they realised your mother was pregnant carrying her brother’s
child they hastily made an arranged marriage with your father. Your grandparents
didn’t want shame brought down upon their house.”
“I think I’m
going to be sick.” Jettermane began trembling violently. “Tell me the rest of
it.”
“Your mother
never forgave your father for marrying her. To the very end she loved your
uncle. When she couldn’t be with him they decided that you would be a good
substitute for her… that you could warm your biological father’s bed until she
could return to him.”
“What about my
father. The one who raised me? I know you said he still lives. I need more
details.”
“After your
father had me intervene your mother got so enraged that she killed him not long
after I took you for my mate. But thankfully she didn’t succeed.”
Alexi spoke
before he could stop himself. “How did Jettermane kill his uncle’s mate?” his
arms tightened around his mate. Pain washed over Blayze’s face.
“Jetter slipped
out one night when I was otherwise occupied. He went by himself and he hunted
his mother down. He thought he was avenging his father. By the time we caught
up with him his mother was dead. And his uncle was cowering in the corner,
begging for his life… My beautiful Jetter was standing there covered in blood
with a look on his face that I never in my life ever want to see again. Even
though she told your father that Masckel Shatara is your father, the truth
later came out. Your brother Ellington, was killed back on Earth with his crew.
He was the one that beat the shit out of you. The others didn’t know who you
were but he had to have known. He is just as viscous as your mother was. Your
Uncle wants your head for the loss of his greatest love.”
“Oh, love.”
Alexi tilted Jettermane’s face and kissed him on the forehead. “We will get
through this. Together we will be stronger than your uncle and his whole clan.”
A strength
seemed to flow through Jettermane, Alexi could feel it rippling just below the
surface. Stepping away, Jettermane squared his shoulder and dried his eyes, a
look of determination replacing the tears.
“We go home, we
gather our people close and we put that bastard in the ground. His corpse will
lie within the cold ground never to touch his lover again. That man is not my father: he is not worth one ounce
of my thoughts. We will take back our planet and lead our people into a safer
world.” His gaze drifted around the people gathered around them. “I want that
man dead and gone. But first: I want him punished for the pain he has caused
our loved ones. He deserves to feel every single piece of hurt he has given to
all he has harmed. I want him kept away from everyone… I don’t want him able to
feed. I want him to hurt.”
Jettermane’s
eyes widened and he looked at Blayze in wonder… “Holy hell! I remember. I
remember it all.” Jettermane’s eyes took on a mischievous glean as he turned
and yelled toward Tangen.”
“Hey, Mongrel
guts! You owe me one hundred red ones. Don’t for a moment think I have
forgotten you losing the bet.”
Laughter echoed
around them. “Out of all the things to remember – that is what first comes to
mind.”
Jettermane let
out a whoop as the ship rumbled to life beneath his feet. A cheer went up at
his next words. “Get ready: were heading in to battle.
